Tree-Climbing Lions in Ishasha

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Discover the rare and iconic tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Africa’s most unique wildlife experiences.

This remote southern section of the park is known for its open savannah, fig tree landscapes, and abundant wildlife including elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, and hippos. Because it is less visited than the northern circuit, Ishasha offers a more exclusive and untouched safari experience.

The famous lions are often seen resting high in large fig trees, scanning the plains below as they watch for prey. While the exact reason is still debated, many believe they climb trees to escape heat and tsetse flies, creating one of the most remarkable wildlife sights in Uganda.

Ishasha is also a birding hotspot, home to a variety of species including the rare shoebill stork.

A visit here completes an authentic African safari experience and shows why Queen Elizabeth National Park remains one of Uganda’s top destinations.
