Ajai Wildlife  Reserve -White Rhino

Ajai Wildlife Reserve, also known as Ajai Game Reserve, is a historically important and naturally rich protected area found in north-western Uganda, within Moyo District, close to the South Sudan border. The reserve lies along the western bank of the Albert Nile and covers an area of approximately 166 square kilometers.

Origin and Establishment

Ajai Game Reserve was gazetted in 1965 with the primary aim of conserving the southern white rhinoceros, which at the time thrived in the area. The reserve was named after Chief Ajai, a respected leader of the Madi people who lived in the region in the late 19th century.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Ajai was one of Uganda’s key rhino conservation strongholds. However, due to prolonged political instability, armed conflict, and intense poaching in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the rhino population was completely lost. Despite this setback, the area retained its protected status because of its ecological value, especially its wetlands, savannah ecosystems, and riverine habitats along the Albert Nile. Today, the reserve is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
